L-3 WESCAM Receives Follow-on Order from New York Police Department for Tactical Imaging Sensors and Digital Video Transmission Technology

NEW YORK, NY, May 13, 2005 – L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its WESCAM (L-3 WESCAM) subsidiary has been awarded a follow-on order from the New York Police Department (NYPD) for advanced imaging technology in support of the department’s evolving homeland security, counter-terrorism and daily surveillance duties.

The superior imaging technology ordered by the NYPD includes two multi-spectral imaging turrets — a 12DS200 and MX-15 — and a portable AzTrack digital microwave receiver. Inventory of WESCAM equipment held by the NYPD now includes 12DS200 and MX-15 imaging systems, Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) digital SkyPod microwave data links, WISARD™ handheld portable receivers and portable AzTrack receivers.

The NYPD has created seamlessly integrated air-to-ground visual information systems as part of its post-911 suite upgrade retrofit. Capable of investigating large areas of New York City in day, night and inclement weather conditions, the NYPD’s airborne fleet includes special mission Bell 412 aircraft equipped with an MX-15TS imaging system, a COFDM digital SkyPod V microwave data link and an integrated moving map. For standard patrol missions, the NYPD operates AgustaWestland A119 Koala helicopters equipped with 12DS200’s, Digital SkyPod V’s and an integrated moving map.

“This follow-on order further exemplifies the confidence the NYPD’s Aviation Unit has in L-3 WESCAM’s product line and our ability to meet evolving mission requirements,” said Paul Jennison, vice president of sales and business development for L-3 WESCAM. “Our long-range, high-magnification optics, state-of-the-art FLIR and mobile microwave technology puts critical situational-awareness data in the hands of New York’s commanders, supervisors and first responders by delivering pinpoint visual information quickly, precisely and accurately. Through the combination of airborne subject coordinates with high-resolution imagery, access routes, obstacles, location, identity and capabilities, suspicious characters and activities are easily identified and addressed.”
