L-3 WESCAM Launches New Evolutionary Performance Features in its MX Series of Imaging Turrets

BURLINGTON, CANADA, September 1, 2005 – L-3 Communications WESCAM (L-3 WESCAM), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications, announced today that the “Evolution Continues” with the addition of advanced performance features to its MX line of multi-spectral imaging turrets.

System advancements specific to MX models are as follows:

MX-15i MX-15D MX-20

Integrated MCU

CMCCD Night Spotter Camera

Laser Illuminated Night Spotter

20µm IR imager

MX-GEO Gen. 3

Integrated MCU

20µm IR imager

MX-GEO Gen. 3

CMCCD Night Spotter Camera

Laser Illuminated Night Spotter

20µm IR imager

MX-GEO Gen. 3

With the integration of these evolutionary performance features, customers will have access to 25% lighter systems, 24/7 EO imaging, 20% improvement in IR range and an expanded ease-of-use control suite.

The integrated MCU feature provides an installed weight savings on fixed-wing, rotary-wing and aerostat platforms of up to 50 pounds. This lightweight EO/IR imaging feature is made possible through the integration of what once were considered external control electronics into the top of the turret.

Using the Charge Multiplied CCD Night Spotter Camera (CMCCD) and the Laser Illuminated Night Spotter operators are able to gain two to three times better resolution over IR technology at night. Long-range ID in low-light conditions is made possible by the Night Spotter Camera, whereas long-range ID in total darkness is made possible by the Laser Illuminated Night Spotter.

The Improved Digital IR Camera boasts superior imaging capability through increased resolution and uniformity. With a 20% increase in IR range magnification and resolution, missions unfolding at night or in less than ideal weather conditions will now result in a higher target ID success rate.

The MX-GEO Gen. 3 package includes a series of new technologies, GEO-Scan, Automated Video/GEO-Tracking, Integrated GEO-Tracking and Adaptive-GEO, each of which aid in delivering maximum target location accuracy.

“L-3 WESCAM continues to provide its customers with state-of-the-art imaging technology,” said Paul Jennison, vice president of government sales and business development for L-3 WESCAM. “Over the last three years, WESCAM has increased its sensor capability from four to six sensors in the MX-15, and from four to seven sensors in the MX-20. The resolution of the cameras has increased by a factor of 20%, and 24/7 EO imaging has now become a reality. MX systems with these new capabilities are scheduled for deliveries in 2005 and 2006.”

L-3 WESCAM is the first and only company to field an integrated family of sensor systems that spans a broad range of size, weight and performance capabilities. The MX Series uses common operator interfaces and LRUs, which lead to ease and familiarity of use, simplified interchangeability, efficiencies in support and technology enhancements.
