BURLINGTON, CANADA,
January 14, 2008 – L-3 WESCAM, a wholly
owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications, announced today that it
has been selected to provide an MX®-15 electro-optical/infrared
(EO/IR) imaging sensor in support of Field Aviation’s recently
awarded contract with the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG).
The L-3 MX-15 is a key component in this crucial surveillance
solution – capturing real-time video intelligence from an
aircraft based on the service-proven Bombardier Aerospace Dash-8
Q300 series. In-flight missions will include sovereignty patrol,
interdiction, search and rescue, medical transportation and other
first-response activities.
Qualified to military standards, the MX-15 will include an improved
digital IR camera that provides superior imaging capability through
increased resolution and uniformity. With a 20% increase in IR
range magnification and resolution, missions unfolding at night
or in less than ideal Icelandic weather conditions will now result
in a higher subject ID success rate.
With its source covert to the human eye, the system’s Laser
Illuminated Night Spotter will focus maximum light power on any
given subject, enabling the longest ID range of ship letters, faces,
vehicles and vessels in total darkness.
The turret will also contain MX-GEO Gen. 3 – the industry’s
most effective and accurate ease-of-use control suite. The suite’s
combination of GEO-Location, Pointing, Focus and Tracking technology
will support ICG operators in providing tracking assistance and
determining accurate subject geographical location, and will reduce
operator workload by automatically focusing imagery, even when
alternating between sensors.
“We are extremely pleased to be on the team selected for
the Icelandic Coast Guard aircraft replacement program,” said
Paul Jennison, Vice President of Sales and Business Development
for L-3 WESCAM. “This selection continues our relationship
with Field Aviation and the Bombardier Dash-8 platform, providing
a proven sensor solution for the Icelandic Coast Guard. Furthermore,
this is another indication of how our MX-15 advanced imaging technology
is making a positive impact on today's evolving maritime patrol
missions.”
