BURLINGTON, CANADA,
October 20, 2008 – L-3
WESCAM announced today that it has been selected by Eurocopter
to supply electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) imaging sensors
for the Spanish Armed Forces’ helicopters. The turrets, which
will be used by the Disaster Response Unit (UME), will be delivered
throughout 2008 and 2009.
“We are extremely pleased to be selected for the Spanish
UME program and to continue our relationship with Eurocopter,” said
Paul Jennison, vice president of government sales and business
development for L-3 WESCAM. “With MX-15i turrets already
on their fleet of EC 135s, Eurocopter’s selection of L-3
WESCAM underscores the essential role our MX-15 imaging technology
plays in responding to today's emergency missions.”
Vital to the UME for visual success in emergency
situations, the MX-15i will be capable of 24/7 EO imaging and
will provide operators with accurate geographical ground references
- while automatically locating, pointing, tracking and focusing
with minimal operator input. Furthermore, the turret will be
configured with an integrated MCU which lends to an installed
weight savings of up to 20 kg. This savings will enable response
teams to allocate more weight to on-board emergency cargo, crew
members and/or victims. Maintenance of these turrets will take
place at Indra Sistemas, WESCAM’s
service depot in Madrid, Spain.
WESCAM’s MX-15i technology will deliver
class-leading range capability and provide real-time situational
awareness of crisis situations caused by adverse weather phenomena
such as floods, earthquakes, landslides and heavy snowfalls.
The systems will also be used for forest fire surveillance.
