U.S. Navy Selects L-3 WESCAM MX-15 EO/IR Sensor for P-3 Fleet

Burlington, Canada, L-3 Communications WESCAM (L-3 WESCAM), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL), announced today that the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and PMA-290 have selected L-3 WESCAM’s MX-15 multi-sensor electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) system for installation on U.S. Navy P-3C maritime patrol aircraft.

Uniquely suited for ISR applications over land and sea, the MX-15 is considered a key element of the Navy’s Critical Obsolescence Program (COP). With its requirements for an advanced, highly reliable and proven EO/IR sensor system to replace its current Infra-Red Detection Systems (IRDS), NAVAIR will receive up to six MX-15 units in 2004 and a potential of up to 60 units over the next five years as funding becomes available.

“Currently, the U.S. AIP P-3 community successfully operates over 60 of our larger, longer range MX-20 AIMS turrets,” said John Dehne, president of L-3 WESCAM. “We are pleased with the U.S. Navy’s confidence in the MX Family of turrets and in the selection of the MX-15 for its non-AIP fleet.”

L-3 WESCAM is the only company that supplies a true family of sensor systems, spanning such a broad range of size, weight and performance. The MX Family of turrets maximizes the use of common components and common interior electronics, simplifying interchangeability with efficiencies in support, technology growth and reduced life cycle cost.

Organizations such as the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have mixed fleets of aircraft that are already leveraging the benefits of the MX Family.

L-3 WESCAM is a world leader in the design and manufacture of stabilized, multi-spectral airborne imaging systems. To learn more about L-3 WESCAM, please visit the company’s web site at www.wescam.com.
