Jeremy took up beach volleyball as a co-op student eight years ago having never played before. His team “JELP” – short for “Help Jeremy”, is comprised primarily of his colleagues in the Mechanical Engineering department.
The skies cleared and the temperature rose as “JELP” took on “Spikeaholics Unanimous” – a group of enthusiastic summer students, “I signed up because I saw it as an opportunity for me to be active and get out of my chair during the day.” WESCAM Marketing’s own summer students, Ethan Silver and Mackenzie Rumble realize the value in networking with employees from across the organization, “it’s a fun way to build a network of colleagues across many departments. The people are friendly, and though we have yet to win a game, I think we have potential.”
Beach volleyball improves flexibility, balance, upper and lower body strength and speed. It is just one of the many activities Wellness at WESCAM promotes throughout the year. Matt Mendonca, part of Team JELP is an advocate for joining in on the extra-curricular activities at WESCAM, “Work/life balance is very important, and WESCAM has never said no to trying new things. Wellness is part of team building in a larger organization, and it’s a great way to break up the day.”
WESCAM boasts two on-site beach volleyball courts surrounded by trees. Colleagues are welcome to enjoy their lunch and cheer their co-workers on from the many picnic tables adjacent to the courts.
Volleyball runs through the end of August, but if volleyball isn’t your thing, the on-site fitness centre and basketball courts are available to all employees. And if you’re looking to make a difference in our community, there is plenty to choose from. Support our Troops runs a 4 on 4 volleyball tournament from July 30th to August 9th to raise money for Wounded Warriors Canada. WESCAM also sponsors teams participating in Hockey for Heart – for the Heart and Stroke Foundation as well as the Around the Bay Road Race for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation, among others.
