We Remember: Volunteer Service Initiative for Remembrance Day

Working at WESCAM

L3Harris Investing For Tomorrow (LIFT) is the L3Harris-wide employee volunteer service initiative launching in time for Remembrance Day in Canada. Throughout the year, and particularly on November 11th, we have the opportunity to remember the efforts of brave Canadians and pay homage to those who respond to our country’s call of duty.

WESCAM employees joined Canadians from coast to coast in a moment of silence, to honour and remember the service and sacred legacy of our fallen heroes. This year, close to 150 employees attended a Remembrance Day ceremony or helped prepare care packages for Canadian soldiers and newcomers to Canada. As a special touch, employees and some of their families drafted thoughtful thank you notes on postcards, which will be included in the care packages. These packages will be donated to the Toronto and Trenton Military Family Resource Centres and the United Way for distribution.

As part of our Take Our Kids To Work Day event, grade 9 students students heard firsthand from John Fisher, Vice President Mission Systems and Programs, who is a Canadian Forces Veteran. Mr. Fisher explained the impact of a small gift and notes from home to troops deployed overseas, particularly during the holidays. Students wrote notes, and learned about the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and giving back to support those in need.

The period leading up to Remembrance Day provides the opportunity to embrace a visual reminder, the poppy, a symbol of dedication and remembrance. As an employer of Canadian Armed Forces veterans, we are proud to support veterans, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and their families through initiatives like the Poppy Fund, which collects donations for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 60 and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 617. The Poppy Fund plays a crucial role in helping to feed, clothe and shelter Veterans, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP and their families.

Poppy Fund donations support individuals with grants for heating costs, food, medication, medical appliances/equipment, essential home repairs, housing and emergency shelter, veterans’ visits, transportation, accessibility modifications, educational bursaries and disaster relief. Donations are accepted year round.Care Package Event Organizers
Legion branches are gathering places in communities and towns across Canada. In fact, for many towns, the Legion is the only community centre that helps keep residents connected. This democratic, non-profit organization has a national reach across Canada as well as branches in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Find your local branch..

You don’t have to be a veteran to join the Legion, there are over 260,000 members, many of whom donate their time and skills to provide essential services within their community. From the Poppy Fund to seniors’ support services and housing and care for the elderly, drop-in centres, youth programs and so much more, there are so many ways to give back.
