From ice cream to volleyball, and dunk tanks to raffles and 5k Runs – the L3 WESCAM Support Our Troops Committee runs many annual initiatives and events to raise funds for Wounded Warriors Canada, a national registered charity with a focus on mental health. Wounded Warriors Canada provides adaptive, innovative and evidence-informed programs and services to Veterans, First Responders and their families. This wholly independent charity relies completely on the generosity of Canadians and Canadian Businesses like L3 WESCAM, since it receives no public funding.
In 2018, L3 WESCAM initiatives raised $12,000 for Wounded Warriors Canada to better support individuals who are part of the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) program. While shy of our annual goal, it reminds us that it is imperative that we increase our focus so that we can go that extra mile to help the over 2000 veterans, first responders and families who rely on the work of Wounded Warriors Canada.
Thanks to generous donors, Wounded Warriors Canada is able to “Honour the Fallen and Help the Living” in many ways including:
- Group therapy
- Animal Assisted Therapy for PTSD
- Resiliency Training and Respite Care
- Research and Education
- Skills Transition
But the need for help, in many cases, outpaces the availability. At this time, the PTSD Service Dog program, for example, is unable to accept application requests due to the high volume of applicants currently in development.
The cost to properly train and pair a service dog is $15,000. The timeline is two years.
Studies show that properly trained PTSD Service Dogs can and do change and save lives. Donors and major funding partners rallied to help when Wounded Warriors Canada launched their PTSD Service Dog program a year ago with a goal of providing 25 service dogs per year. Ultimately, the objective of this program is to increase the number of properly trained PTSD Service Dogs to the ill and injured Veteran and First Responder population. This program also set out criteria for trainers to meet in order to train and pair a service dog with a recipient.
Your donations and support are vital to the life-changing and family-saving results for our Veterans, First Responders and their families. We are #InThisTogether, so remember, next Wheels for Warriors bike tune up or Volleyball Tournament, get out there and show your support. You will have fun, and you will be doing something good for a person in need.
Consider joining us in 2019 as we continue to fundraise through fun activities and events at WESCAM. We look forward to having you with us!
